Race Report Assen
Once again, passionate fans, great weather and an exciting racing programme were on offer at Jack's Casino Racing Day in Assen. In return, Europe's fastest racing series delivered thrilling duels, remarkable lap times and smiling faces at the legendary TT Circuit.
BOSS GP F1 Class
Ingo Gerstl (AUT, Team Top Speed) came close to beating the lap record during qualifying at one of his favourite tracks. He secured a dominant victory in the first race in his Toro Rosso STR1 Cosworth, putting on an impressive display for the large crowd until the end of the race. Three Formula 1 cars were once again on the grid, just like at the season opener in Hockenheim: Ulf Ehninger (GER, ESBA Racing) in his 1997 Benetton, and Thomas Jakoubek (AUT, Team Top Speed) in the 2012 Lotus F1. Ehninger may have scored crucial points in the title race with second place in the first race and a win in the second. Gerstl, on the other hand, suffered a setback on Sunday when his car suffered technical issues in the pits shortly before the start of the race due to a technical problem. Jakoubek, Gerstl's teammate, was delighted with second place in the second race and a further improvement in the Formula 1 car, which was still new to him.
FORMULA Pro
There were several firsts in the two Formula classes this weekend. GP2 driver Simone Colombo (MM International) from Italy took the lead in the Pro classification standings with two victories. Meanwhile, Marco Ghiotto (ITA, Scuderia Palladio) finished second in the first race, just 0.7 seconds ahead of Michael Fischer (AUT, Red Rose Racing by LRT) in the World Series V8. Max Cuccarese (ITA, MM International) ultimately missed out on the podium in fourth place in the modern F2, after another tough duel with compatriot Ghiotto.
Colombo was unbeatable once again in the second race. Not even a race interruption could jeopardise the former BOSS GP champion. Fischer secured second place for the second time this weekend, making up some ground in the standings. Swiss BOSS GP rookie Thomas Zeltner celebrated his debut in the Dallara GP2 with Scuderia Palladio. His third-place finish in the second race was his first BOSS GP podium. The race was also affected by a collision between Cuccarese and Ghiotto midway through, which eliminated both drivers from podium contention.
FORMULA
The first race was a familiar sight from the grandstands or on the live stream this season. Paul O'Connell (IRE, HS Engineering) won his class for the seventh time. The fast Irishman also finished fourth in the overall standings. Stefan Eisinger-Sewald (AUT, Red Rose Racing by LRT) made it onto the podium once again after the spring race at the Nürburgring. The FORMULA rookie class driver finished ahead of Walter Steding (GER, Scuderia Palladio), who drove a 2011 GP2 car this time instead of a GP2/05. The German, who now only races sporadically, demonstrated impressive speed throughout the weekend. Not far behind were: Roland Rupprechter (AUT, R&B Research and Wealth Management) in fourth place, and Jens Renstrup (DEN, MM International) in fifth place.
There was a lot going on in the FORMULA classification in the second race. O'Connell had to retire during the race stoppage due to an exhaust failure. Stephan Glaser (SUI, Scuderia Palladio), the reigning SUPER LIGHTS champion, made no mistakes and won for the first time since moving up in class. Tempers flared between Steding and Rupprechter in the final phase of the race. After an incident between the two drivers, Rupprechter spun, but the Austrian was able to continue and ultimately achieved his best result with second place, leaving Steding in third.
OPEN & SUPER LIGHTS
In the OPEN Class, Haralds Šlēgelmilhs (LVA) drove the Dallara World Series V8 T12 Evo for HS Engineering to first place, emphasising his exceptional position by achieving the fastest race lap of the weekend (1:22.322). In the SUPER LIGHTS class, Stefan Scho (GER) in the Lola Formula 3000 T91/50 Cosworth lived up to his favourite status by achieving two unchallenged victories, finishing ahead of Henry Clausnitzer (GER, WF-Racing) in the World Series V6.
The final races of the 31st BOSS GP season will take place in Italy, beginning with two races on the Mugello circuit in Tuscany from 5 to 8 September 2025.
